Flight of the Conchords album drops
April 26, 2008 by traveler.
New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk parody duo has finally released their full album after a teaser EP, DVD, and many months after Season 1 ended. Why the long wait? Sounds like classic Murray mismanagement to me. In any case, this album will satisfy your Conchord craving.
The Good
As fans of the show already know, the songs on this album are fantastic. There are so many great tracks, it is really hard to choose a favorite. I love Foux de Fafa for its lyrics from an ‘Intro to French’ textbook, The Prince of Parties (with its Eastern vibe), The Most Beautiful Girl [In the Room] (the most qualified love song ever) and so many others. If I have to pick a favorite, though, it would have to be Bowie. Every lyric is whip-smart, and Jermaine’s impression is spot-on. You can preview these songs on iTunes or Amazon. FoC’s MySpace page has a few tracks also (but not Bowie). The best thing about Flight of the Conchords’ music is that their parody is also musically solid. Their songs are well-written and have terrific melodies.
The Bad
The album is filled with tracks from the show, but there are a few songs from the show that didn’t make it. What happened to If You’re Into It and Crying? Gotta get the EP for those tracks. Actually, I was expecting something more along the lines of the EP- songs you already know & love, plus a few other treats like live versions. This album could have been better if it included extras like Bret’s ‘angry dance’ instrumental, Who Wants to Rock the Party with Jermaine accompanied by cassette tape, and the Crazy Dogggz (arf arf).
The Verdict
Despite this album’s omissions, it is a must-buy for fans of the show and fans of comedy alike. This is an album you will play for friends, and perhaps it will convince a few people to join Mel’s fan club. Pick up your copy today, and check FoC’s MySpace Page for the band’s summer tour dates.
